I think can live with that. Alsp I really need to get the hitch that is sitting in my garage actually mounted on my Outback.

An Outback with a hitch and a small trailer is surprisingly handy.

That’s my exact plan! I already have a Curt hitch and a Thule rack but I’ve been lazy about installing because it requires trimming a heat shield and that is going to be a pain in the ass.

The cost to rent a truck vs trailer is unreal. Pretty sure I was able to move my entire apartment via trailer for <$25. I think the last time I move via a truck it was closer to $110. Granted that was for 3 people. But even to rent a truck for just me would have been north of $50.

The trucks add up quick because they charge per mile while the trailers are just per day. I did OK because I just needed 23 to make a round trip from UHaul to my house to the brush dump and back to UHaul. Worked out to $81 which with the damage waiver which I’m glad I got because I got a rock chip on the windshield. I guess I brushed enough of the leaves out that they didn’t charge the cleaning fee.

Or you could spend hours and hours bagging the debris like I do. I guess we’re lucky the city even picks it up

I can put out 3 bags per week and it has to be bundled in the bag. My house is on half an acre with 30 trees. I was keeping up OK with an electric chipper but it quit on me and we are listing the house next week so the brush had to go. I’m in an unincorporated area so we contract trash and the best quote I got for a haul-off was over $200.

So I was thinking about this a little more in the shower after returning the truck. The truck I rented had 130k miles on it. At $1.09 per mile thats $140k just in mileage fees. The truck is an E-350 chassis cab with a U-haul box in it. Ford no longer sells E-350 vans, but for grins an basic XL trim F-350 chassis cab is around $33k right now. Throw a cheap box on it and I figure it’s around $45k. So they’ve already charged 3x the price of the vehicle just in mileage fees alone. Add on the flat $25 trip fee, all shipping materials, and insurance waivers where no damage happens and it looks like they do alright on these. Obviously there is a lot of overhead and maintenance, but an average truck like this clearly makes 4x-6x or more revenue vs. purchase price over its lifetime.

We finally got hacked off at our garbage service and cancelled it. It took over a month to get things squared away with the new service, so we ended up with several weeks worth of garbage piled up. On top of it all, my wife has been getting rid of old junk and has been working on the garden. All that is to say we had an entire trailer full of garbage and debris by the time she was done. The local dump took it all for $50.

Throwing a wrench in your calculations, if you’re renting the truck one way instead of round trip you get a mileage allotment based on the distance between pickup and dropoff locations and they’ll only charge for the miles you go over that allotment.
